What is an off-campus drive? The playbook (India, 2026)

Four different things get called an off-campus drive, and they ask completely different things of you. One needs your placement cell. One needs you to be at an address on a Tuesday morning with printouts. Two need neither.

Sorting out which one you are looking at takes about thirty seconds and saves a wasted week, so start there.

The four things people mean

The same phrase, four different processes
What it is calledWhat actually happensWhat you need
Off-campus driveOne company opens a single application window to everyone outside its campus list. Same online test, same day, one result announcement.Register yourself online before the window shuts
Walk-in driveNo shortlist. You turn up at a stated address on a stated date and are interviewed that day, sometimes with an offer by evening.Documents in hand and a whole day free
Pool campus driveOne host college, several employers, students invited from a set of nearby colleges.Your own placement cell to nominate you
An ordinary applicationNo window, no cohort, no test day. You reply to a posting and are dealt with individually.Nothing but the posting

The fourth row is the one people undercount, and it is where most hiring actually happens. Across the 20,392 internship postings we track, 14,004 different companies were hiring, and 10,878 of those posted exactly one role and never posted again. A company hiring one person does not run a drive. It writes a post and waits.

So drives are the visible part of the market rather than the whole of it, and building a search around them means waiting on a small number of scheduled events while the rest of the market opens and closes around you.

Who is eligible, and which filters actually bite

Nearly every drive posting sets three filters, and they are checked mechanically before a human sees anything.

Read all three before you spend an evening on the form. Nothing you write in the form changes any of them.

We cannot tell you what share of Indian hiring runs through drives, because our corpus does not tag them and nobody publishes a reliable count. What we can tell you is the shape of the market they sit inside, which is what the numbers on this page describe.

What happens on the day

  1. Registration and verification. ID and documents checked against what you claimed. Discrepancies get you sent home here, not later.
  2. The aptitude round. Quantitative, logical and verbal, usually timed and usually the biggest single cut of the day.
  3. The technical round. Coding, or a domain test, or a technical interview depending on the role.
  4. The interview. Technical first, then a conversation about availability, location and joining date.
  5. The result. Same evening for a walk-in, up to a few weeks for a large drive.

Two things are worth knowing before you go. The aptitude round is the one you can most reliably prepare for and the one most people skip preparing for. And the last question is almost always about joining date and location, so decide your answer before somebody asks it in a room.

What to have ready

Carry hard copies, even when the posting says digital

Printed resumes matter more than they should. Interview panels at a drive are working through a queue, and the person in front of them with a clean sheet of paper is easier to interview than the person offering a phone screen.

How to tell a real drive from a fee collection

This is the section that matters most, because the audience for the phrase "off-campus drive" is exactly the audience that gets targeted.

The cheapest check is the one nobody does: search the company name plus the word "careers", and see whether the same drive is on their own site.

What a drive will not do for you

Drives are a scheduled, structured, visible way in, and structure is genuinely valuable when you have never done this before. They are also a queue, and the queue is the point of them.

The unstructured half of the market has no queue, and it is much larger. 65.9% of the postings we track hand you a named person's email address, against 24.4% that offer an application form at all. On a drive you are one of thousands taking the same test. In an inbox you are one of nine.

On pay, the honest number: across 3,178 postings where the employer stated a monthly stipend themselves, the median is ₹12,000 a month, the 25th percentile ₹8,562 and the 75th ₹18,000. About 4% pay ₹40,000 or more. A drive does not change that distribution; it just puts more people in front of the same roles.

What we would actually do

  1. Apply to the drives that fit your batch and branch. They cost an evening each and the structure is worth having.
  2. Do not build the week around them. Registration windows are weeks apart and the rest of the market does not wait.
  3. Spend the other four evenings on postings that name a person, because that is where the ratio is in your favour. The cold email playbook is the exact wording we would use.
  4. Prepare aptitude once, properly. It transfers to every drive you will ever sit.
  5. Keep the document folder packed. A walk-in announced on Monday for Wednesday is normal, and the people who go are the people who did not have to assemble anything.

Our live list of what is open right now is free, and Hopin will do the applying and the chasing if you would rather spend the evening on the aptitude round.

Where the numbers come from

Every figure here is from 20,392 internship postings aimed at candidates in India, collected mostly between April and July 2026: 14,004 distinct companies, 10,878 of which posted exactly once, 65.9% carrying a recruiter email and 24.4% offering a form. Stipend percentiles use only the 3,178 postings where the employer stated a monthly amount themselves; our system generates an estimate when an employer states nothing, and every one of those is excluded.

98.3% of the corpus was collected from public posts rather than from company career pages, so it describes the hidden job market rather than a census of Indian hiring. That caveat cuts hardest on exactly this page: large scheduled drives are announced on company career sites, which is the part we see least of. Nothing here claims to measure how common drives are, and the eligibility and day-of description are what these postings say rather than something we counted.

Questions people ask us about this

What is an off-campus drive?

A hiring round a company runs outside its campus recruitment list. It opens one application window to anyone who meets the eligibility bar, puts everyone through the same test on the same day, and announces results together. The word is also used loosely for walk-ins and pool campus rounds, which work differently.

Who is eligible for an off-campus drive in India?

Almost every drive posting sets three filters: your graduation year, your degree or branch, and a marks bar, usually stated as 60% throughout or a CGPA line, often with a no-active-backlogs clause. Read those three before you spend an evening on the form, because they are checked mechanically and nothing about your application changes them.

What is the difference between an off-campus drive and a walk-in?

A drive is a scheduled process you register for online and are shortlisted into. A walk-in has no shortlist: you turn up at an address on a stated date with your documents and are interviewed the same day. Walk-ins are faster and far less selective at the door, and they are also where most fee-collecting fakes operate.

Do you need permission from your college TPO for an off-campus drive?

Not for a true off-campus drive, which you apply to directly. A pool campus drive is the exception: it is hosted at one college for students of several, and you generally have to be nominated by your own placement cell to attend. Some colleges also have a one-offer policy that limits what you can accept afterwards, so check that separately.

What documents do you need for an off-campus drive?

A photo ID, all your mark sheets including the current semester, a college ID or bonafide certificate, printed copies of your resume, passport photographs, and the registration confirmation or hall ticket if the drive issued one. Carry hard copies even when the posting says everything is digital.

Are off-campus drives free to attend?

Yes. A genuine employer never charges to interview you, and a registration fee, a training charge, a security deposit or a paid certificate is the single clearest sign that the drive is not a drive. No legitimate company in India recovers hiring costs from the candidate.
