The average bench strength across India's top IT services companies, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, HCLTech, Wipro and Tech Mahindra, among others, has fallen to late single digits, or at most 12 percent, over the last three years as firms restructure their workforce to adapt to artificial intelligence (AI)-led disruption and improve employee utilisation.
Improved hiring sentiments
This quarter, all the companies have spoken about resuming hiring in good numbers, except for Wipro. Even Tech Mahindra, which skipped campus hiring last year, said it will start hiring freshers again.
IT companies will be focusing on expanding their forward deployed engineers (FDEs) talent pool.
TCS is investing in experiential, project-based learning to improve deployment readiness while gradually moving towards a more skills-centric employee pyramid.
Infosys said it will hire about 6,000 frontier engineers or FDEs in the coming few years.
HCLTech said it is sharpening its hiring strategy by focusing on a select group of high-quality, specialised freshers, internally referred to as the “elite cadre”, who are expected to evolve into FDEs over the next two to three years.
